Believe it or not, French toast recipes can be dated all the way back to medieval
Europe. The poor could not afford to waste food, so to use leftover bread (even if it
had passed its best) and heat it up was the clever solution. Today, French toast is
a very popular breakfast option as well as a delicious snack. Below is a lovely
recipe for French toast with vanilla, a sweet alternative to what you might normally
expect.

There aren’t many ingredients involved in the recipe, so gather together:

6 slices day-old bread
2 eggs
½ cup milk
1 tbsp sugar
1 tsp vanilla extract
Pinch of salt

Begin by beating the eggs then adding the milk, vanilla, sugar and salt into a
shallow bowl. Next place the bread in the mixture and leave it to soak for 30
seconds on each side. This allows the mixture to seep into every bit of the bread.
Cook on a hot griddle until golden brown on each side and properly heated
through. This goes really well with lashings of maple syrup, and the vanilla flavour
tastes beautifully sweet.

French toast is such a quick recipe to throw together. However, if you really want to
make the best French toast, preparation can start the day before. Instead of
soaking the bread for 30 seconds then grilling, there is a different way.

Start by whisking the eggs, milk and vanilla until it has a slight frothy texture to it.
Dip the slices of bread in the mixture and then place them on a baking tray. If any
mixture is left over, use this to pour over the bread. Cover this and place in the
fridge overnight.

The next day, put butter on your griddle and place your bread on it. Turn them over
so that can brown on both sides, and there you have a slightly alternative way of
cooking it. Depending on how much of a rush you are in and how far ahead you
plan your meals, there are two options here that will suit either way. The best thing
about leaving the bread to soak overnight is that the vanilla flavour really soaks into
the bread.

A great alternative to go with the French toast is to have some fresh fruit and cream
on the side. Strawberries, blueberries, raspberries or bananas...or anything you
like really. This French Toast Recipe With Vanilla is one of many ideas you'll find at
